Montevideo - Uruguay thrashed Peru 6-0 Tuesday in Montevideo to build up its hopes of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Striker Diego Forlan scored a hat-trick with goals in the eighth minute, from the penalty spot in the 37th minute and a header in the 56th minute. Forward Carlos Bueno added a brace in the 61st and the 68th minute, while the veteran Sebastian Abreu scored Uruguay's sixth goal in the 89th minute.
Peru played with 10 men from the 37th minute, after Paolo Guerrero was sent off for bringing down Carlos Godin in the box.
"It was perfect," Forlan said. "This is beautiful."
The harsh defeat could mean the exit of Peru national coach Jose del Solar, who was already severely questioned ahead of the game.
After six games in the South American qualifiers, Uruguay are joint fourth with eight points, level with Brazil, who were to play Argentina Wednesday.
Paraguay is the only team that remains unbeaten and leads with 13 points from five games, with Argentina second on 10 points. Colombia has nine points, one more than Brazil and Uruguay.
In South America's 10-team World Cup qualifiers, each side plays home and away with each of the other nine. The top four finishers win a place in the World Cup, with the fifth-place team facing a representative of the North, Central American and Caribbean region in a playoff.
On Wednesday, beyond the classic Brazil-Argentina, the South American World Cup qualifiers see Bolivia-Paraguay and Ecuador- Colombia, with Venezuela-Chile on Thursday. (dpa)
