Venables says he has held talks with Newcastle over manager's job

London - Former England manager Terry Venables confirmed on Thursday that he has held talks with Newcastle United over the vacant manager's job.

"I can confirm I met Newcastle representatives," The Sun quoted the 65-year-old as saying.

"Those talks will continue in the morning [Thursday] when, hopefully, I can give them a final decision."

Newcastle have been without a manager since Kevin Keegan quit the club at the beginning of this month, angry at his lack of control in transfer matters.

Owner Mike Ashley has put the club up for sale and Newcastle have lost four games in succession.

Venables's last coaching job was as assistant to Steve McClaren with England, a role that ended after the failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

The Englishman previously managed both Tottenham Hotspur and Middlesbrough and led England to the semi-finals of Euro 96. (dpa)
