Warne says Michael Clarke should be Australia's vice-captain

Former Australian leg-spinner Shane WarneSydney, Dec. 13: Former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne has said that Michael Clarke should be made the vice-captain of the Australian team.

Warne’s endorsement of Clarke came after “Pup” successfully led the Australian team to victory in a Twenty20 match against New Zealand.

“When you win the toss, hit the first ball you face for four and win the match in your first game as national skipper, you would have to think it's not a bad start, ” Fox Sports quoted Warne, as saying.

“He has all the attributes and the image, flair, confidence in his own ability, respect for the game and respect from his team mates which has been earned. He knows himself, understands his own game and is hungry for success, ” Warne added.

According to Warne, though there is still time for Ricky Ponting to hang up his boots and gloves, Clarke is settled in his life, feeling fresh, prepared, and happy.

“So, to me, the next logical step is to groom him. I believe the best way to do this would be to elevate him to the vice-captaincy in all forms of the game. Gilly (Adam Gilchrist) has done a wonderful job but won't be around for too much longer in all forms of the game. I reckon he will hang the gloves up and decide to play only one form, probably Test matches, ” said Warne.

“It's an important role being VC. You get around the group and make sure everyone is OK, and they have no issues - be a sounding board for some players. Pup is an extremely thoughtful and perceptive person. Gilly, I'm sure, would endorse the decision and be 100 per cent supportive, ” Warne said.

“The other contender, Mike Hussey, could do it but is in the same age bracket as Ricky. Really, why look for others? To me he (Clarke) is a standout. I also think he should captain New South Wales whenever he gets the chance, even if it is for just one or two games a season. The way international cricket is scheduled, ” he said. (ANI)
