London, Mar 8: Tennis fans would get an opportunity to watch the Wimbledon championship finals live in High Definition 3D at hundreds of cinemas around the world, for the first time in its history.
The decision is an outcome of a deal signed between Sony and the All England Lawn Tennis Club, The Telegraph reports.
The Men's Singles Semi Finals, the Men's Singles Finals and the Ladies' Singles Finals will reportedly be screened in 3D.
The live 3D production, in partnership with Wimbledon's host broadcaster--the BBC, will also be offered to other global broadcasters, the paper said.
Ian Ritchie, Chief Executive of The All England Lawn Tennis Club, said that the move has been taken to improve the presentation of The Championships.
"Wimbledon is renowned for its heritage and sense of tradition. At the same time we are always looking for ways to improve the presentation of The Championships by successfully blending that tradition with innovation," Ritchie added.
Fujio Nishida, President of Sony Europe said that: "Watching tennis in High Definition 3D is a stunning experience, bringing the speed of the action and the emotions of the occasion to life; it is as close to the atmosphere and excitement of Centre Court as actually being there."
In January 2010, BSkyB became the first broadcaster in the world to project a live sports event in 3D when Sky Sports screened a football match between Manchester United and Arsenal.
Following this, many international television networks had broadcast major sporting events in 3D, including matches from the 2010 FIFA World Cup. (ANI)
