Nariman Point may be home to one of the world’s tallest building if the Maharashtra government carries through with its plans.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning to build a commercial building with more than a 100 storeys behind the Mantralaya Gymkhana. The land currently has offices of various government departments and political parties.

MMRDA officials gave a presentation about the proposed structure to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on December 5 and submitted a proposal to the state asking for permission.

The skyscraper is part of the Rs 3,500-crore Nariman Point Redevelopment Plan, which Chavan has asked MMRDA to complete by 2013.

The move to build the skyscraper, however, is likely to test the strained relationship between the Congress and its ally the Nationalist Congress Party. For the project, the MMRDA will need to take over land from the Public Works Department (PWD), which has its own plans for revamping Mantralaya. Chavan has put clearance of the final bid for the Mantralaya makeover on hold, much to the displeasure of PWD minister and Deputy Chief Minister Chaggan Bhujbal

“We will not be involved in the Mantralaya redevelopment. Our orders are to develop the area from NCPA till Cuffe Parade,” said Metropolitan Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad. Senior MMRDA officials, however, maintained that the government was planning to let them develop the area till Churchgate.

“If we get the state government’s permission, we will be able to make close to Rs 12,000 crores from the project,” Gaikwad added.

MMRDA is also planning a 101-storey tower at Wadala. But with only three bidders, it is now thinking of refloating tenders.
