Steele County Relay for Life Committee organizing two events ahead of relay

Only a couple of months are left for the Steele County Relay for Life Committee's largest event for the American Cancer Society.

But meanwhile the committee is organizing two events. The motive of the first event is to raise money and awareness of Relay for Life, which collects funds, raises money for cancer research. The second event will be celebrating the county's cancer survivors.

Mary Boettger, a member of the committee, said the more money they will be raising the more they can put towards research and the more help they can provide to cancer patients in Steele County.

On Sunday, the Owatonna VFW is going to host a breakfast for the committee, which is the second for the local 2015 Relay for Life, from 8 a. m. to noon.

According to Boettger, this is the first time that the committee has worked with the VFW for holding two breakfasts. She said that it's been a good fundraiser for them and proved helpful in raising good awareness.

In the breakfast you will be served with pancakes, French toast, eggs, sausage, coffee, milk and juice. You can purchase the tickets for the breakfast in advance for $5 by calling 507-390-5760 or at the door for $6. Children of age group 5and below can eat free.

Boettger said that they've had a really good turnout, and people were really supportive. They are hoping for the same this time also.

There will be another event hosted by the Owatonna VFW in June. On June 8, the committee is going to have its third annual birthday party for cancer survivors and their families and caregivers at 7 p. m.

Boettger said that it's a chance to focus more on the cancer survivors. She added, "Relay is such a busy time, and we don't feel we celebrate the survivors as much as we should so we've held this the last three years to give special attention to them and spend time with their families and friends".
