Supreme Court directs Vigilance investigate Prasar Bharti issueThe Supreme Court, upholding the decision of Delhi High Court, has allowed a Central Vigilance Commission probe to find irregularities in the function of public broadcaster, the move that could further stimulate war between B S Lalli, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Prasar Bharati and Arun Bhatnagar, chairman, Prasar Bharati.

The apex court's three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan ordered to conduct probe as per Prasar Bharti Act, 1990 according to which the CEO is entitled to function as per advice of nine-member Prasar Bharti Board.

It should be recalled that Prasar Bharati CEO BS Lalli had challenged the Delhi High Court decision on July 27 in which the court had directed to appoint a retired judge as an independent observer for the board.

Meanwhile, Mr. Lalli said that he would welcome the special audit ordered by the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry. Lalli, through his counsels K K Venugopal and Soli J. Sorabjee, objected some of the decisions taken by the board alleging that majority of the members had not signed them.

However, PIL counsel Prashant Bhushan rejected the allegations saying that the resolution was passed by nine members.
