Chennai, Apr 30: As a mark of protest against Indian government''s failure to pressurise the Sri Lankan government to cease the attack on the LTTE endangering innocent Tamilians in the island''s battle zone, activists of Tamil nationalist movement undertook a day long hunger strike in Chennai on Thursday.

Under the banner of Tamil Desiya Iyakkam, the activists, along with their leader Pazha Nedumaran took part in this hunger strike.

They contended that the war in island nation is still on and the ministers in India are trying to "deceive the people" by not informing them correctly about the present situation since they are more concerned with the ongoing elections to the Lok Sabha.

"More than 5000 bombs have been hurled against the Tamils. More than 1000 people have died, war is continuing. Our Chief Minister and central Home Minister Chidambaram, they have in mind the parliamentary election so they want to deceive by spreading these kinds of rumours," said Pazha Nedumaran, leader Tamil Desiya Iyakkam, a nationalist forum of Tamilians, Chennai.

Diplomatic pressure over the war was stepped up past week with the UN Security Council, the United States and others demanding Sri Lanka to stop its offensive against the LTTE to avert rising civilian casualties.

On April 24, Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon and National Security Adviser M. K Narayanan had met Sri Lanka''s President Mahinda Rajapakse and urged him and his government to work towards declaring a truce in the closing chapter of a 25-year war in which nearly 6,500 civilians have lost their lives since February 2009.

Meanwhile, responding to reports of possible threat from the LTTE rebels, Junior Foreign Minister Anand Sharma told media persons in Amritsar that India is secured and all steps to foil any such attempts are on place.

"LTTE is a banned terrorist organisation. Our security agencies, our Coast Guard, our Navy are alert to the possibility and they have taken all steps which are required to pre-empt any such situation. I do not see any threat coming from them, from this organisation which has done enough damage in the past," observed Sharma. (ANI)
