Tokyo - Tokyo stocks fell in morning trading Wednesday as automotive shares dropped on poor earnings reports in the sector and investors sold stocks to lock in profits from recent gains.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average shed 8.72 points, or 0.08 per cent, to trade at 10,366.29 while the broader-based Topix index retreated after 13 days of gains, falling 1.14 points, or 0.12 per cent, to 957.88.
The dips were seen a day after Toyota Motor Corp, the world's largest carmaker, reported a net loss of 77.9 billion yen (819 million dollars) in the April-to-June quarter as global demand remained low during the worldwide recession.
On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar traded at 95.30-35 yen, up from Tuesday's 5 pm quote of 94.94-95 yen.
The euro traded at 1.4417-22 dollars, up from late Tuesday's quote of 1.4403-04 dollars, and at 137.40-45 yen, up from 136.75-79 yen.
