Tokyo stocks rise on positive economic data Tokyo  - Shares in Tokyo rose on Monday morning due to positive economic indicators in Japan and the US.

The Nikkei 225 Stock Average was up 147.90 points or 1.42 per cent to trade at 10,559.99.

The broader-based Topix index rose 14.86 points or 1.55 per cent to 971.62.

Among the data boosting stocks were falling US unemployment and rising machine orders in Japan.

On the currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT) the dollar traded at 97.32-37 yen, up from Friday's 5pm quote of 95.38-39 yen.

The euro traded at 1.4187-92 dollars, down from Friday's 5pm quote of 1.4355-56 dollars.

The euro traded at 138.12-17 yen, up from Friday's close of 136.92-96 yen. (dpa)
