Nasik, Oct 4 : Onion traders in Nasik went on a two-day strike on Thursday over the government's decision to suspend onion exports for 15 days.
The price of onion is expected to shoot up further in next few days in the wake of a short supply during the strike, as Nasik houses the largest wholesale market of onions in the country.
Traders said any respite was unlikely for the next 15-20 days because of high demand, even as there is no problem in arrival of the stock.
Damage caused to onion crops following heavy rains in major onion producing states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka has also affected the capital markets with prices shooting up at an alarming rate, making the consumers to bear the brunt of the price rise.
Nasik, Dec. 23: Pravin Mahajan, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Mumbai Sessions Court for the murder of his elder brother and BJP leader Pramod in April last year, has been transferred to the Nasik Road Central Jail.
Prior to his shifting to Nasik, Pravin was lodged in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail as an undertrial.
He was shifted to Nasik at around 4.30 p. m. on Saturday, Jail Superintendent Ashok Rane told reporters here. (ANI)
Nasik, Feb 12: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists indulged in acts of violence in Nasik today, few hours after the party had announced that their chief, Raj Thackeray, would not seek anticipatory bail ahead of his impending arrest.
MNS workers destroyed shops owned by North Indians in Nasik. Police detained at least 26 MNS workers.
Earlier, a party spokesman said Thackeray had decided not to seek anticipatory bail.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Police have beefed up security at Thackeray’s residence after a case was registered against him for disturbing harmony in the city.
Nasik, Feb. 14: The general secretary of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's Nasik unit, Vasant Gite, who was detained as a preventive measure ahead of party chief Raj Thackeray's arrest, was released on bail on Thursday.
Gite was taken into preventive custody along with two other Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leaders, Sampat Jadhav and Haribhau Lonari on Wednesday.
Nasik, Feb 15: Police and civic authorities sponsored a peace rally here on Thursday to soothen the nerves of north Indian migrants after days of ethnic violence in the city.
"North Indians had started to feel threatened, and around 5,000 to 6,000 of them left the place within four to five days. To calm down their fears, we decided on this rally," Nasik's police chief, S. M. Sayeed, said.

Officers from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Mumbai questioned Lieutenant-Colonel Srikant Prasad Purohit, for days before finally arresting him on Wednesday.

Incessant rain for the fifth consecutive day, caused in sharp increase in water levels in Gangapur and Darna dams in the district.

Nashik, Feb 7 : Goods worth millions of rupees were destroyed in the fire that broke out at a storage place of logs and wooden items at Wadala village near Nashik here.
Around ten fire tenders were rushed to the site and engaged themselves in extinguishing the rising flames.
Nisar Khan Ahmed, the owner of the godown said, "We got a call at around 11:30 a. m., when we reached this spot, we saw the godown was on fire. The reason for the fire is still not known; we don''t have enmity with anybody."
"All our lifelong savings have now been destroyed in the fire. We cannot do anything about it. If the government provides relief to us, then only we can think of starting the business again," he added.
