TTK Healthcare to set up New Plant for Orthopedic ImplantsOn Friday, according to a company official, TTK Healthcare will set up a new plant at Mahindra World City to make orthopedic implants and invest around Rs. 20 crore to expand the business.

Group Vice Chairman, T. T. Raghunathan said that they have decided to install a new plant at Mahindra World City to make orthopedic implants like artificial knees as their present production set up is small.

He told journalists that after knees, they intend to make hip and shoulder implants.

He said, "Currently our capacity is 80 knees per month and we plan to grow that to 300 knees per month in 12 months. Our target is to take the capacity to 10,000 knees per year in a phased manner".

TTK Healthcare has struck a technology deal with US-based BP Trust to make the knee implants.

According to Raghunathan, about 40,000 knee implants are made in India every year and several people subsist with knee troubles.

Raghunathan added that their knee implant cost is around Rs. 35, 000, which is lower than what is offered in the market.

According to BP Trust's Frederick Buechel, there are six sizes available and doctors would opt the one, which would go well with their patients.

Raghunathan said that European or American made artificial knees are not appropriate for Indians as they sit on their heels or sit cross legged and a BP Trust knee implant lets a person to do these things.

He said that last financial year they sold roughly 10,000 valves and the profits were around Rs. 20 crore.
