About one thousand supermarket stores in the UK are now offering discounts on healthy food as it has been found that about a quarter of the population in the country are obese. According to the latest data, about a forth of the people in the UK are overweight, while only bout 6 per cent believe that they are obese. The initiative to offer discounts on healthy food is a part of the Department of Health's Change 4 Life campaign.
Supermarket stores of Asda, the Co-op and Aldi are now offering discounts on healthy food to promote healthy eating habits. The stores are offering discounts on healthy ingredients such as fruit and vegetables and low fat yoghurts.
About four million recipe cards will be distributed while a recipe finder will be launched online to allow families find cheap and healthy meals. Health minister Paul Burstow said"These are discounts that are being promoted under the Change4Life brand, which is a central government campaign. It might be a buy one get one free, it might be other substantial reductions."
"This is specifically targeted at fruit and veg, low-fat foods, the things that actually contribute to the recipes being promoted," he added.
