It is apparent from the current public opinion that favors the Democratic Party. There’s clear surge of Democratic allegiance among people.

According to the Washington Post-ABC News Poll, either of the Democratic presidential hopefuls – Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama would defeat the Republican presidential candidate, John McCain, if the national election were held now; President Bush’s endorsement might not help saving McCain from defeat.

The poll released on Wednesday revealed that John McCain would get 40% of the vote compared with 52% for Barack Obama, and McCain would lose to Hillary Clinton 44% to 50%. It shows that Obama leads McCain by 12% points, while Clinton leads McCain by 6% points.

The poll found that about 2/3 Americans disapprove President Bush’s way of working and feel that the war was not worth fighting. 63% of those surveyed in the poll said the war against Iraq wasn't worth fighting, and 51% said the U.S. hasn't made ``significant progress'' toward restoring civil order in Iraq; these voters would definitely go against McCain.

It also brought out interesting facts on the issue – "New Ideas and New Direction" vs. "Strength and Experience." 80% of voters advocating new ideas support Obama, while 65% endorse Clinton. However, the voters looking for experience favor McCain, by 2-1 over Clinton and by 3-1 over Obama.

But, age is the factor that might go against McCain, who is presently 71-years-old and if he gets elected, he would be the oldest first-term president. On the Contrary, Obama is young and would be the first African American president, and Clinton would be the first female president.

The poll also found that Obama leads McCain on top issues in the poll: the economy, health care, immigration and ethics in government, but according to the majority of Americans, McCain is better suited to handle the U.S. campaign against terrorism.

The Washington Post-ABC News random telephone Poll was conducted between Feb. 28 and March 2, surveying 1,126 people. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, and 4 points among Democratic-leaning independents.
