Amy Winehouse, the diva of soul, jazz, and R&B was hospitalized after fainting in her London home. Her father, Mitch Winehouse told Sunday Mirror that Amy was suffering the early stages of emphysema and an irregular heartbeat and would have to wear an oxygen mask if she did not stop smoking drugs.
"With smoking the crack cocaine and the cigarettes her lungs are all gunked up," Mitch Winehouse said, "There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She's got 70 percent lung capacity," he said.
The 24 year old singer collapsed at her home in north London after signing autographs for a group of fans. She had not slept for 48 hours. Though Amy is still hospitalized and undergoing tests she is scheduled to sing on Friday at a concert in London to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday and take part in the Glastonbury music festival the day after.
Mitch Winehouse felt it would be good for Amy to perform. "When she's been inactive work-wise then that's when the problems really start. The doctors have said that medically there isn't any reason why she can't do Glastonbury," the paper quoted him as saying.
"The doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking drugs, it won't just ruin her voice, it will kill her," Mitch Winehouse said. "She's got emphysema," he said. "It's in its early stages, but had it gone on for another month they painted a very vivid picture of her sitting there like an old person with a mask on her face struggling to breathe."
