It was a big
anticlimax for David Archuleta when David Cook, who couldn’t impress judges on grand finale, took away the American Idol’s seventh season title on Wednesday night, well before the 7,000 people at Nokia Theater, Los Angeles.
Well, David Cook, 25-year-old bartender playing in a band, certainly wasn’t the contestant who delivered his best performance during the final night of competition on Tuesday, but he certainly did get more votes than Archuleta.
Getting 56 percent of the 97.5 million votes cast after Tuesday’s performances, the rocker from Blue Springs, Mo., won the “American Idol” title edging out Archuleta, a 17-year-old balladeer from Murray, Utah, who got 44 percent of votes. It was a surprise victory because all three of the program’s judges endorsed Archuleta as the winner during Tuesday’s competition.
Cook started weeping; he was speechless; it was perhaps the most emotional “Idol” winning reaction ever, when host Ryan Seacrest announced the winner. He said, "This is amazing. Thank you!"
Simon Cowell apologized to Cook for being disrespectful last night, and then he complimented them both for being “triers.” "When I went back home and watched it, it wasn't quite so clear-cut as we called it. David, I will take this opportunity to apologize, because I think I was verging on disrespectful to you," Cowell said. "You're tryers, and you've both given me your best. For the first time ever, I don't really care who wins," the Brit said.
