On Wednesday Actor-activist announced that he is donating $100,000 to help fight Prop 8, a November ballot initiative that would do away with same-sex couples' right to marry.
"Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8," said Pitt in a statement.
The financial fight over Proposition 8 has been intense. The gay marriage supporters had managed to take an early fundraising lead, but last month, a $1-million contribution by the Knights of Columbus, followed by infusions of cash from other gay marriage opponents, turned the table.
Hitherto, Prop. 8 opponents have raised $11,119,614.56, while the Prop 8 supporters’ side has amassed $16,647,476.77.
Brad Pitt had vowed not to get married till everyone in the United States has the same right. This might make one wonder if his intentions of donation were entirely altruistic.
