Sen. Hillary Clinton picked up the endorsement of Eileen Macoll, the vice chairwoman of the Washington State Democratic Party, on Thursday. Macoll, who was a previously uncommitted Washington state superdelegate, endorsed Clinton at the time when she direly needed it.
Supporting Clinton, Macoll set herself apart from the state party chairman, Dwight Pelz, who endorsed Sen. Barack Obama on May 19 and called on Democrats to rally behind Obama.
Macoll said she was spurred to announce her endorsement by her reaction to Memorial Day. "I just got very emotional this Memorial Day weekend. This war just makes me sick. I think Hillary Clinton would be the best commander in chief to get us out of this mess in Iraq, " she said.
Speaking of Clinton, Macoll said, "I wanted to show my support for Hillary. I think she has handled this whole campaign with style and grace. I think she's a valuable role model for young women entering politics and life."
Clinton's chances of winning the nomination are little, but Macoll said her endorsement "is not a meaningless gesture for those who really care about this country." She explained that she had held off her endorsement because she wanted to let the voters determine the nominee, she said, "I almost regret that it took me this long to get to this decision."
Clinton now has the support of six Washington superdelegates, while Obama has seven. Four remain officially uncommitted.
