Joe Courtney, a Democratic superdelegate, who had planned to wait until the last primary vote was cast before announcing his choice, decided to endorse Sen. Barack Obama, just a day after the Illinois senator registered his victory in Oregon.
On Wednesday morning, Courtney, a Democrat and a Congressman of the United States House of Representatives for Connecticut's 2nd congressional district, stated that he would cast his superdelegate vote for Obama at the Democratic National Convention this summer. State Party Chairwoman Nancy DiNardo of Trumbull is now the only uncommitted delegate from Connecticut.
In a statement, Courtney said, "The results last evening from Oregon have clarified that Barack Obama will be the nominee for our party. As John McCain continues to act with a free hand in the Republican contest, it is clear that we must unite and rally around a nominee to give the nation a strong alternative. While I am making this endorsement, I want to take the time to recognize Sen. Clinton for her contributions to this contest and to our nation. Hers was a gutsy effort, and one that spoke to the economic anxiety that so many in eastern Connecticut and across the nation are feeling after eight years of George Bush's rule.”
In a statement in response to Courtney's endorsement on Wednesday, Obama said, he was "proud to accept Courtney's support."
Speaking of Courtney, Obama stated, "In his first term in Congress, Congressman Courtney has shown a true understanding of the need to restore our image abroad and invest here at home. We share the common goals of giving all our children the world-class education they deserve, solving our energy crisis and reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and creating good jobs for American workers.”
