"D.C. Madam," the Vallejo woman convicted of running prostitution services whose clients included some high profile Washingtonians, hanged herself at her mother's home in Florida on Thursday. She was convicted two weeks ago by a federal jury.
According to Tarpon Springs police Capt. Jeffrey Young, 52-year-old Deborah Jeane Palfrey was found hanged with a nylon rope in a shed on her mother's property in Tarpon Springs, about 20 miles northwest of Tampa on Florida's Gulf Coast. Palfrey's 76-year-old mother, Blanche Palfrey, found the body Thursday morning.
The Police said Palfrey left at least two suicide notes and other writings to her family in a notebook, but they did not disclose their contents. Blanche Palfrey had no sign that her daughter was suicidal, and there was no immediate indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.
Deborah Jeane Palfrey was convicted by the U.S. District Court jury in Washington on April 15 of running a prostitution service that catered to members of Washington's political elite, including Sen. David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican. She was convicted of money laundering, using the mail for illegal purposes and racketeering. However, Palfrey had denied her escort service engaged in prostitution, saying that if any of the women engaged in sex acts for money, they did so without her knowledge.
