Da Brat Sentenced To 3 Years Of Prison For AssultAtlanta rapper Da Brat, 34, was sentenced to three years in prison, on Friday, for hitting a hostess in the head with a rum bottle during an argument at a nightclub, Studio 72, in Tucker last fall.

The rapper, whose real name is Shawntae Harris, appeared before a DeKalb County judge on Friday morning. She pleaded guilty to aggravated assault charges. Superior Court Judge Gail Flake sentenced her to three years in prison and seven on probation, along with 200 hours of community service and completion of substance abuse treatment, mental evaluation and anger management classes.

Da Brat’s family and friends sat in the back row of the courtroom and cried as she was taken into custody. Harris bid her goodbyes to her family and was then escorted out of the DeKalb County courtroom.

"My client always understood she did something wrong from the beginning," said Harris' defense attorney BJ Bernstein.

Prosecutors said Harris walked up behind the woman and hit her in the head with the bottle, cutting the woman's cheek, and then tried to run out the door. But she was stopped by security people.

The victim is now suing Harris for an unstipulated amount for medical expenses and other costs.
