E coli Outbreak Spreads In Five US StatesThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in an update on its Web site that E-coli outbreak in the Midwest has spread to the  states of Michigan and Ohio.

One lab confirmed case has been reported in Georgia, which is similar to 44 other cases reported in Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and New York. All the illness that has been reported till now has been attributed to the same type of E.coli, which causes a potentially deadly bacterial infection.

Linked to beef sourced from Nebraska Beef Ltd and sold in Kroger stores in Michigan and Ohio, these two states were the worst hit with 41 cases being reported in these two states alone. Initially Nebraska Beef recalled 531,707 pounds of ground beef but by July 3, approximately 5.3 million pounds had been recalled.

The CDC said that the first E-coli cases were reported between May 30 and June 24, and though no deaths have been reported, 21 people have been hospitalized while one developed kidney failure.

A spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Taka Wiley, said Georgia health officials were investigating at least seven more cases for E-coli all of them in Colquitt County. Beef from a Moultrie restaurant tested positive for E coli and it had sourced some of the beef form Nebraska Beef.

A woman who fell ill after eating the beef she bought at a Kroger store in Dublin, Ohio, has filed a lawsuit against the Kroger Co. in a Franklin County, Ohio court.
