“The Forbidden
Kingdom” this weekend captured the No. 1 ranking from “Prom Night” at the box office earning $20.9 million in ticket sales. The Lionsgate martial-arts film starring Jackie Chan and Jet Li opened at No.1 at the U.S. box office.
This is the first martial arts film in four years to reach the top spot featuring the Asian superstars playing multiple parts in a modern time travel adventure that unfolds in ancient China. With a PG-13 rating, "The Forbidden Kingdom" is a family-friendly film rather than action-filled martial arts show. It is part of a new Asian line of films from the Weinstein Co.
"Forgetting Sarah Marshall," a romantic comedy about a nice guy (Jason Segel) who gets dumped by his glamorous girlfriend (Kristen Bell), opened in second place with a $17.3 million take. Harvey Weinstein, whose company released the "The Forbidden Kingdom" with partner Lionsgate said, "I couldn't believe it had never been done before.”
“Prom Night,” distributed by Sony/Screen Gems, fell to the No. 3 spot with a gross of $9.12 million. Al Pacino's serial killer thriller, “88 Minutes” (Tristar) finished fourth in its debut with $6.8 million; fifth place went to “Nim’s Island” (Fox), with $5.6 million in its fourth week.
