Fourteen-Year-Old Iowa Girl Abandoned Under Nebraska Safe Haven Law

A 14 year old Iowa girl was found abandoned on Tuesday at Creighton University Medical Center in Nebraska under its safe haven law. However, the person who left her could face the wrath of law. She is the 17th child overall and the first from the state to be abandoned.

The law was implemented to protect the infants by allowing the parents to leave them at any state- licensed hospitals. But since the girl does not belong to Nebraska, the man may be prosecuted.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services revealed that the girl belongs to Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Todd Landry, director of the Health and Human Services said, "We have made a formal report of the abandonment to the Iowa child abuse hotline. We are working with the Iowa Department of Human Services to resolve this situation as quickly as possible."

Many who have been abandoned and left at the health centers are teenagers or preteens. Since the law mentions "child" without defining it, anyone up to the age of 19 can be included in it.

Last month a father abandoned nine of his children, who ranged in age from 1 to 17. This is making the State lawmakers to re think about the proposition and implement changes .But they may not be able to act until the Legislature reconvenes in January.
