Sen. Barack
Obama got another superdelegate added to his delegate count on Monday when Senator Jeff Bingaman, Democrat and superdelegate from New Mexico announced his endorsement for the Illinois senator.
Bingaman’s endorsement for Obama may be little disturbing for Sen. Hillary Clinton, who already missed out Gov. Bill Richardson’s endorsement — despite winning the New Mexico caucus back on Feb. 5.
In his statement, Bingaman said, “To make progress, we must rise above the partisanship and the issues that divide us to find common ground. We must move the country in a dramatically new direction. I strongly believe Barack Obama is best positioned to lead the nation in that new direction.”
In his own statement, Obama thanked Bingaman. He praised Mr. Bingaman for taking the lead on environmental matters and advocating energy independence.
The current reports say that Obama leads Clinton in endorsements from their Senate colleagues, 15 to 13. Bingaman has endorsed Obama, but Obama still trails Clinton in superdelegate endorsements 239 to 265.
