McCain Planning ‘Late Show’ Chat With David Letterman

McCain Planning ‘Late Show’ Chat With David Letterman After the ‘made-for-TV’ feud between the Republican presidential nominee, John McCain, and ‘Late Show’ host, David Letterman, it appears to be patch-up time for the two!

According to Letterman’s website, McCain be on the show Thursday - the day after his final debate with Democratic rival Barack Obama, at Hofstra University – nearly a month after he cancelled his September 24 appearance at the last minute.

That day McCain had announced, with great fanfare, that he was suspending his campaign, and returning immediately to Washington to deal with the financial crisis.

Letterman was accommodating enough to understand the reason McCain had cited, and he did the show with replacement guest, Keith Olbermann.

However, while Letterman was taping the show, he learned that the Senator had not left for Washington - he was in News York, five blocks away, getting ready for an interview with Katie Couric, anchor of the CBS ‘Evening News’.

The talk-show host was visibly upset, and he remarked on his show the next day, “Twenty-four hours ago, I felt like a patriot ... and now I’m feeling like an ugly date. ... I feel used. I feel cheap. I feel sullied.”

In fact, Letterman issued a comic warning to McCain saying, “John, here’s how it works: You don’t come to see me, you don’t come to see me, well, we might not see you on Inauguration Day.”

When the New York Post reported last week that the two sides were discussing the possibility of the GOP candidate returning to the program, Letterman had another dig at McCain, and said, “In an attempt to save his campaign, they’re talking about coming back. So we said, sure, we’d love you to come back ... but they’re being squirrelly. Politicians can be squirrelly. ... I just don’t know if we can trust him.”

Last Thursday, Letterman said that the McCain campaign had hinted at the possibility of Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin, coming with McCain to a ‘bury-the-hatchet’ appearance.
