Michelle Obama: Barack Obama Will Fight For Equal Rights For The Gay Community

Michelle Obama: Barack Obama Will Fight For Equal Rights For The Gay CommunityBarack Obama will fight for equal rights for the gay community, said Michelle Obama, the wife of the Democratic Party’s White House nominee, while addressing an audience of 250 people at a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee.

"Barack believes that we must fight for a world as it should be.  A world where together we work to reverse discriminatory laws like D.O.M.A. (Defense of Marriage Act) and Don't Ask Don't Tell," Mrs. Obama said, addressing Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council Gala in New York City.

As per D.O.M.A. stipulations that as per the federal government definition, marriage is a legal union between a man and a woman and
therefore states are not required to recognize same sex marriages even if they are recognized in other states.

Commonly called ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, it allows gay men and women from serving in the army but prevents them talking about their sexuality preferences openly.

Michelle Obama drew a parallel between the fight for civil rights and gay rights and said, Obama as president would fight for equal rights for the gays in much the same way he fought to help working class families overcome poverty. “The world as it is should be one that rejects discrimination of all kinds," she said.

On the issue, Senator Obama said that while marriage is between a man and a woman “these are decisions that need to be made at a state and local level.”

Last week presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain, reiterated his support for D.O.M.A."I voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, which clearly indicated the unique status of a marriage between man and woman," McCain said in Arlington, VA.  "I will continue to support that, I will continue to have my position."
