NBC Settles $105 Million Lawsuit

NBC Settles $105 Million LawsuitThe American television network headquartered in the GE Building in New York City's Rockefeller Center, NBC (National Broadcasting Company) has settled a $105 million lawsuit brought by family members of a man who apparently killed himself when “Dateline NBC: To Catch a Predator” came to his house to film his arrest.

Patricia Conradt, claims in her lawsuit that her brother Louis William Conradt Jr., an assistant district attorney in Rockwell County, Texas, fatally shot himself as he was about to be arrested by the police. Louis was accused of attempting to solicit an adult posing as a 13 year old boy over the internet.

The local police decided to arrest Conradt at his home when he did not come to the agreed house. He killed himself as the police and camera crews from NBC’s show “To Catch a Predator, entered his home. The terms of agreement were not disclosed but a joint statement released by both sides said, “The matter has been amicably resolved to the satisfaction of both parties,"

Working with the activist group Perverted Justice, the NBC had adults impersonating children on online chats through which they lured them to a house to be met by TV cameras and police. A federal judge ruled that a jury might feel the network “crossed the line from responsible journalism to irresponsible and reckless intrusion into law enforcement."

The NBC series “To Catch a Predator” ended in December with its future uncertain.  NBC spokeswoman Jenny Tartikoff said, "Right now we are working on other investigative stories focusing on national security and the economy, if we do more, we want to make sure we are complementing past investigations not just repeating them."
