In order to initiate a large-scale removal of child pornography material contained in the Usenet newsgroups, the New York Attorney General is putting more pressure on the ISPs to eliminate access to such newsgroups.
New York AG, Andrew Cuomo announced that AT&T and AOL have agreed to eliminate access to 88 such newsgroups. State investigators found that these newsgroups contained nearly 11,000 sexually lewd photos featuring prepubescent children. In some cases they found photographs of children being raped and sexual activity involving animals.
According to Internet Watch Foundation, nearly 80 percent of the world's commercial child pronography is hosted on US servers. So, an agreement with Verizon, Time Warner Cable and Sprint has been made to purge the servers of sites and Usenet groups that were found to contain child pornography.
AT&T will remove direct access to all binary newsgroups that contain full-blown data files, whereas, AOL will block access to every newsgroup available.
A new website named www.nystopchildporn.com has also been launched, which lists all participating and non-participating ISPs, in support for this cause.
