October is slated as the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in which there will be events to increase public understanding of the disease, including its prevalence, approaches to screening and prevention, treatment options, and resources that offer updated breast cancer information. Various events such as announcements by researchers would be organized during this period.
Estimates given by the American Cancer Society (ACS) are that 182,460 new cases of invasive breast cancer will occur among women in the United States during 2008, with approximately 1,990 new cases expected in men.
Breast cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed form of cancer in women after skin cancer, and is the second cause of cancer death in women after lung cancer. The ACS estimates breast cancer would result in 40,930 deaths in 2008 which will include 40,480 women and 450 men. Early detection and improved treatment of the disease have resulted in breast cancer death rates declining since 1990.
