Obama backs Dalai Lama's 'Middle Way' approachWashington, Feb 22 - In the face of objections from China, President Barack Obama met the Dalai Lama Friday saying the US supports his "Middle Way" approach of neither assimilation nor independence for Tibetans in China.

photographers, and, unlike during some previous visits, the Dalai Lama

departed the White House without speaking to reporters.

A closing comment by the Dalai Lama on Wednesday was mistaken for a profanity by the person transcribing his remarks at a speech on peace.

The exiled Tibetan leader urged listeners to share his thoughts with others if they found them interesting. If not, he said, they could ‘forget’.

According to Fox News, the closed captioning on a large screen at the Rhode Island Convention Center transcribed the remark as an expletive.

Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, an exiled spiritual and temporal leader of six million Tibetan Buddhists, a philosopher-scientist, an author, and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, received the honour Thursday, the Christian Science Monitor reported.

"I think he has become the best known Buddhist in the world," says John Berthrong, former academic dean at Boston University's School of Theology.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who has met with the U. S. president in almost every visit to Washington since 1991, is scheduled to arrive at Washington DC on July 6. Such a meeting would allow him to discuss the political situation in China and explain his decision in March to step down as Tibet's political leader.

Dalai Lama's nephew dies in US traffic accident

dalai-lamaWashington, Feb 15 : A nephew of the Dalai Lama died in northeast Florida Monday evening after he was hit by a car while walking along a highway, according to US media reports.

Jigme Norbu, 45, was struck and killed by a sports-utility vehicle while walking along the highway in Flagler county, CNN said citing the Florida Highway Patrol.

Norbu was dead when emergency services arrived at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 7.30 p. m., the highway patrol said.

Norbu was taking part in a "Walk for Tibet" from St. Augustine to West Palm Beach to promote several international causes, according to the Ambassadors for World Peace website.
