Polygamist sect leader sentenced to life for child sex abuse in Texas

Polygamist sect leader sentenced to life for child sex abuse in TexasTexas, Aug 10: Polygamist sect leader and Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints head Warren Jeffs has been sentenced to life imprisonment for sexually assaulting two under age followers in Texas.

He was found guilty of coercing two teenage girls into a `spiritual marriage'. Jeff also became a father to a child of a 15 year- old girl.

A forensic analyst testified Jeffs, 55, had an almost certain DNA match to the child of a 15-year-old mother.

Prosecutors also played audio recordings in which Jeffs was heard instructing dozens of his young wives on how to please him sexually, the Telegraph reports.

Prosecutor Eric Nichols asked the jury for a life sentence, saying the case was `a prosecution to protect people'.

The court heard that the polygamist leader told the girls they needed to have sex with him, which Jeffs called `heavenly' or `celestial' sessions, in order to atone for sins in his community.

Several former members of the church have testified that Jeffs ruled the group with a heavy and abusive hand.

Jeffs also allegedly excommunicated 60 church members he saw as a threat to his leadership, breaking up 300 families while stripping them of property and `reassigning' wives and children, the paper said. (ANI)
