Scientists Develop “Exercise Pill” To Keep Your Body Fit as Fiddle

Scientists Develop “Exercise Pill” To Keep Your Body Fit as FiddleYou can now maintain your weight and stamina without cutting on your diet or exercising heavily; isn’t it a wonderful idea? Well, it certainly is. In a new discovery, researchers have invented an "exercise pill", which helps you stay fit as fiddle without doing hard exercises.

The drug, which was tested on mice, has shown tremendous potential to keep fit and fine physique without cutting down fats. The researchers came to this conclusion after they studied the biological signals that allow the body to respond to exercise. They found that certain chemicals could stimulate the same pathways to boost endurance and burn up fat.

The drug turned the mice into mini-marathon runners with extra back up of stamina that did not put on weight. The mice which were given the drug could run for a longer period of time on a treadmill than the mice which were not given the drug.

The drug called AICAR, was so effective, that it increased running time of the mice by 44%, even when it did absolutely no exercise.

"We were blown away. This is a drug that is like pharmacological exercise. After four weeks of receiving the drug, the mice were behaving as if they'd been exercised," reported the lead researcher Professor Ronald Evans, from the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California.

The mice that were fed with the drug also got the other benefits associated with exercise. They remained lean even when they were fed with high fat diet, which otherwise would have made them obese. Other than this, their insulin response improved too, with lowering of blood sugar levels.

The findings, published in the journal Celland, also suggested that the drug may help in reversal of the muscle frailty associated with ageing or diseases such as muscular dystrophy.

The scientists who are now working with the World Anti-Doping Agency to develop a blood or urine tests for the drugs, however have the fear of the drug being misused and abused by jocks.
