The Siena College poll released Monday showed that Obama’s once-imposing lead in New York has shrunk to a mere 5 points. Obama is leading McCain 46% to 41%.
"As voters begin to focus on the race, New York's overwhelming Democratic enrollment advantage is not reflected in how voters tell Siena they plan to vote," said Siena poll spokesman Steve Greenberg.
The last republican candidate to win New York was Ronald Reagon, taking it in 1984.
In the survey of 627 likely voters, just under 80% said they believe McCain is thoroughly or somewhat qualified to be president as compared to 67% who were of the same opinion about Obama.
Approximately 70% said that they believed Obama's running mate, Sen. Joseph Biden, to be qualified enough to be president, while only 47% thought the same about GOP nominee Sarah Palin.
According to the poll, Obama has a 56% to 32% favorabilty-to-unfavorability rating as compared to 50% to 37% for McCain. Biden and Palin have the same favorability rating, 46% to 26%, in New York.
