Staten Island University Hospital Pays $89 Million To Settle Fraud Cases

Staten Island University Hospital has agreed to pay $89 million to settle claims in fraud cases registered by Medicare, Medicaid and a military health insurance program.
In a Statement Benton Campbell, U.S attorney for Eastern District of New York said, "Those who defraud and jeopardize the Nation’s vital, federally funded health care programs will be aggressively investigated and held to account".
The hospital spokeswoman however gave a reassurance to all that this heavy payment shall not become a hindrance in the ongoing development process of the hospital, she also stated that the Hospital had been setting aside funds and that it was closing all pending cases to make a fresh start.
Some important cases which were responsible for this settlement were— The first being fraud bills sent to Medicare and TRICARE (Military health insurance program) from 1996 to 2004 for a Cancer treatment called stereo tactic body radio surgery which was not covered by government plans. The hospital pays a huge $25 million to the duo.
In another case the hospital will release $15 million to New York and $12 million to the U.S for improper billing of alcohol and substance abuse treatment during the year 1994 to 2000.Many more such cases involving treatment of psychiatric patients in unlicensed beds and fraudulent counting in a federally funded Resident program are also part of the settlement.
Such settlement boosts the morale of the ailing and instills a confidence in the common man to fight for his rights.
