US appeals court strikes down Obama healthcare law’s insurance mandate

Atlanta (Georgia, US), Aug. 13: In a major blow to the Obama administration, a federal appeals court has struck down a central provision of the 2010 healthcare law, ruling that Congress has overstepped its authority by requiring virtually all Americans to obtain health insurance.
The divided three-judge panel of the U. S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit in Atlanta is the first appellate court to rule against any portion of the statute.
In its ruling, the panel teed up many of the arguments likely to dominate a Supreme Court review.
Georgian President pardons 407 prisoners on New Year’s eve

Atlanta, Jan 1: Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has reportedly pardoned 407 prisoners on New Year's eve.
According to Xinhua, out of the 407 prisoners who were pardoned, 339 were to leave jail on Friday to join their families and friends in time for the New Year celebration.
Presidential pardon documents were already sent to the Minister for Correction and Legal Assistance, Khatuna Kalmakhelidze, who said the other 58 prisoners would have their jail time reduced by more than half.
Thieves demanded ransom for former president's body
Submitted by Jamie Williamson on Wed, 03/10/2010 - 05:52Athens/Nicosia, March 10 - Cypriot authorities Tuesday arrested two people, including an Indian national, for allegedly stealing the corpse of former president Tassos Papadopoulos from his grave three months ago and said the suspects had earlier demanded a ransom.
Police arrested an Indian national and a Greek Cypriot after they confessed to having removed Papadopoulos' remains from its coffin in December and placing the body in another person's grave.
Justice Minister Loucas Louca said the motive behind the well-organised heist was financial.
The two men said they had called the family of the former president and demanded a ransom of 200,000 euros, Cypriot state television RIK reported. The family has denied ever paying the ransom.

DJ AM called himself “the luckiest man alive” as he recalls the tragic plane crash of Sept. 19 that killed four passengers and left DJ AM and rocker Travis Barker severely burned.
“When the plane was on the runway I took my shoes off and fell asleep. The next thing I remember is us crashing into something,” he said.
“I woke up to Travis screaming and the plane engulfed in flames. I remember thinking it was like ‘Miami Vice,’ where a car is on fire and you run before the gas tank explodes — we gotta get out of here!”
Infant Mortality Ranking Shows U.S. at 29th Place

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics says in a report that the U.S. ranks 29th worldwide in infant mortality. This has the U.S. worsening its ranking tying with Slovakia and Poland but falling behind Cuba. In 1960 the U.S. came in at 12th place and it was ranked 27th in 2004, while Japan which is ranked third has an infant mortality rate of less than half the U.S. at 2.8 per thousand live births.

Scientists are trying to discover a link between Parkinson’s disease and low blood levels of vitamin D. A U.S. team found that 55 % of patients with Parkinson’s had low levels of vitamin D as compared to 36 % of healthy elderly people. Following this researchers at Emory University are trying to find out if the vitamin deficiency is a cause or the result of having Parkinson's.

Federal Health officials said 25 % of teenage girls have been vaccinated with the new vaccine Gardasil, against cervical cancer last year in its first full year of distribution. Gardasil, by Merck & Company protects against the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, or HPV that cause about 70 % of cervical cancers.
