Study: Expulsion From School Can Push Adolescent Girls Into Deep Dungeons Of DepressionA recent study on adolescent girls showed that the adolescent girls who are expelled, suspended or dropped out of school by the 12th grade have more chances to fall in abyss of depression by the time they reach 21. The students from 18 Seattle schools in high-crime neighborhoods were studied under this research. The development of positive and antisocial behaviors was analyzed in these children.

The latest research by University of Washington showed that girls expelled from school have double chances to get depressed in their future life. The study showed that thirty-three percent of the girls who dropped out of school later became depressed compared to 19 percent who were not, and twenty-eight (28) percent of the girls who were suspended later suffered depression as compared 19 percent of girls who weren't suspended.

According to researchers, the expulsion from school leaves a deep impact on the mind of adolescent girls. Such girls also suffer from various problems in the future life. One of the researchers, Carolyn McCarty, a Washington University professor of pediatrics said that the one reason may be that school failure stigmatizes girls more strongly or is harder for them to overcome. She added that girls with conduct problems, such as school failure, tend to have long-term problems with cascading effects. She concluded that the present study shows the strong impact of school expulsion on the mental health of girls.
