Study: Red Wine Can Help Ward Off Breast Cancer

Study: Red Wine Can Help Ward Off Breast CancerRed wine is known for its various health benefits. A new research, led by Eleanor G Rogan, a professor in the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, offers one more reason for women to drink red wine.

It is a renowned fact that the breast cancer occurs due to increased estrogen, which collects and reacts with DNA molecules to form adducts. Red wine has a component known as Resveratrol which can prevent breast cancer.

Dr Rogan explains the connection of Resveratrol to the cellular functions that result in breast cancer. She said, "Resveratrol has the ability to prevent the first step that occurs when estrogen starts the process that leads to cancer by blocking the formation of the estrogen DNA adducts.”

This research also proved that resveratrol also suppressed two other contributors to breast cancer. The other two risk factors are the expression of CYP1B1 and the formation of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin.Researchers explained that resveratrol works by inducing an enzyme called quinine reductase which renders estrogen metabolite inactive.

The researchers also found that large quantity of resveratrol is not required for this purpose. Even 10 µmol/L resveratrol can reduce formation of estrogen DNA adducts. Hence a glass of red wine can save a life as it contains between 9 and 28 µmol/L of resveratrol.

Hence this research has given enough reasons to make red wine part of every celebration. The research also proved that a glass of red wine can save many women from the deadly disease of cancer.
