U.S. video game industry witnessed a tremendous growth in the month of June, with sales of video game hardware and software rising up by 53 percent. The major contributor in this dramatic increase was Nintendo Co.'s Wii and handheld DS gaming system and Konami Corp.'s blockbuster title "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots."
"Metal Gear Solid 4," which is exclusively available for Sony's PS3 consoles, is on the top slot as June's best-selling game, with 774,600 copies sold. The PS3 console sales rose by 94 percent with 405,500 units sold in U.S. as compared to 208,700 units sold in May. This rise in PS3 sales has been attributed to the launch of "Metal Gear Solid 4."
Activision Blizzard Inc.'s "Guitar Hero on Tour" for the DS, grabbed the second spot with 422,300 units sold, followed by Microsoft's "Ninja Gaiden II' with 372,700 units.
As far as the sale of game consoles is concerned, Nintendo Inc.'s Wii remained on the top, with 660,000 units sold during June. Wii remained the best-selling game console in the U.S., with 10.9 million units sold, since its release in November 2006. Also, June's top ten best-selling games include six games made for Nintendo hardware.
Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 sold 219,800 consoles with 17.8 percent increase from May.
Hardware sales grew by 54 percent to $615.1 million from $399.2 million a year ago. Same goes with the software sales with 61 percent increase to $872.6 million from $542.2 million.
In total, the U.S. video game industry generated $8.3 billion in sales, which shows that the stagnant US economy has not affected industry's performance, with more and more people turning towards home gaming.
