With October 6, Monday, as the voter registration deadline, the Florida State University (FSU) Vote Coalition held the ‘Frenchtown Getdown’ to sign up voters for the presidential election, November 4.
Octavia Singleton, event coordinator for the FSU Vote Coalition, said many events that could help people get involved politically happen away from Frenchtown. However, this time around, student groups canvassed the neighborhood, urging residents to come to the event and register.
One of the students, who is majoring in social work opined: “This is our way of giving back to the community for the weekend.”
Describing the event as ‘important to the community’, Tallahassee State Representative, Curtis Richardson, lauded the effort and said: “What you are doing is going to where the people are. There are people who can’t get to the library or the Supervisor of Elections Office. This is right in the neighborhood.”
Supervisor of Elections, Ion Sancho, said voters can also send a completed application at the Post Office before the last mail pick up on Monday, and registered voters can change their addresses up until they cast their ballot on Election Day.
Other than at the FSU voter drive, people can sign up at the Leon County Supervisor of Elections Office, 315 S. Calhoun St., still on Monday, the last day to register, from 8 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.
In addition, through Monday night, they can register at the main Leon County Library, 200 W. Park Ave., or New Leaf Market, 1235 Apalachee Parkway.
