Notwithstanding poor
reviews, Smith's superhero debut brings in $66 million over the holiday weekend. Previously, "Men in Black," "Men in Black II," "Independence Day" and "Wild Wild West" led the charge.
But this one is his highest opening gross ever for the weekend. The Peter Berg-directed movie also stars Charlize Theron. In its first weekend since it entered the U.S. theaters, on Tuesday evening, it banked $107,321,000. Smith kept up his presently unparalleled streak at the box office. "Hancock" is his eighth-consecutive #1 opener and also his eighth to earn at least $100 million.
After considering superhero flicks for years, Smith finally settled down on the boozing misanthropic character of John Hancock for making his debut in the genre that always seemed to be a no-brainer for him.
“Hancock” had to pass through the critics’ scanner. Michael Phillips of The Chicago Tribune wrote that it "can offer only an A-list headliner in a D-list project." Clearly, audiences disagreed!
Over the weekend, Will Smith’s “Hancock” Tops the Box Office, marking his fifth July 4 #1. The Box-Office top five have been as follows-
#1 "Hancock" ($66 million)
#2 "WALL-E ($33.4 million)
#3 "Wanted" ($20.6 million)
#4 "Get Smart ($11.1 million)
#5 "Kung Fu Panda" ($7.5 million)
