Vijender wins bronze medal in WBC
Beijing Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh has settled with a bronze medal as he went down to Uzbekistan's Abbos Atoev in the semifinal of the middle weight category of the World Boxing Championships (WBC) at Milan, Italy on Friday. Vijender has become first Indian pugilist to win bronze medal in World Championship.
Vijender, the world no 2 boxer, lost to Attoev Abbos by 3-7 in the semi-final of the 75-kg category. Vijender had defeated Derevyanchenko Sergiy of Ukraine in quarterfinal 12-4 but he failed to overcome last hurdle in the way of title round.
First round ended with 1 point each but Abbos came with straight punches in the second round to take lead by 5-1. Vijender fought well in the final round but could only mange to finish at 3-7.
Vijender said that he feels proud to become first Indian to win bronze medal at this prestigious event and he is a little bit disappointed to not to make into the title round.
