Wealthy German fined for theft of 300-dollar Prada bag in Hong Kong

Wealthy German fined for theft of 300-dollar Prada bag in Hong KongHong Kong - The wealthy German head of a mortgage corporation has been convicted of stealing a 300-US-dollar Prada bag from a Hong Kong hotel bar, a news report said Tuesday.

Timo Woskowiak, 43, Asia-Pacific head of Hypo Real Estate, was found guilty Monday of stealing the bag from the bar of the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong where he was staying.

Woskowiak, from Berlin, who reportedly earned 580,000 US dollars including bonuses last year and owns two properties in Germany, was fined 320 US dollars by Hong Kong's Eastern Court.

The Prada bag was picked up by Woskowiak after it was left beneath a table in the bar by a Chinese man who had just bought it from a nearby store, the South China Morning Post reported.

He took it to his hotel room, where it was found by police six days later, and said he intended to hand it in to police or the Prada store but had been too busy to do so.

Woskowiak's lawyer Graham Harris said his client would "almost certainly" lose his job because of his theft conviction and was considering whether to file an appeal.
