Wearing contact lens could lead to increased risk of developing eye infection and even blindness: CDC

It has been reported in a new study that use of eye contact lenses could lead to increased risk of developing eye infection and it could also cause blindness. Center of Disease Control (CDC) has come up with the finding.

CDC researchers concentrated on nearly 41 million estimated US contact lens wearers. There were two surveys: one was conducted to estimate how many adults wear contact lens and the other was carried out to know whether their cleaning habits could have a link to risk behaviors. CDC carried out the study along with the American Optometric Association.

It has been found by researchers that 99% of the population do not follow the right instruction regarding cleaning, wearing, and storing their lenses and it leads to infections that could cause blindness. As per the study, 55% of participants pour new solution to the one already there in place of discarding the leftovers.

According to Dr. Carol Record, with Drs. Record and Record Optometrists, “They don’t throw their contact lenses away enough. They mishandle their contact lenses by topping off solution in their case. You must absolutely discard the solution everyday, and the third thing is they sleep in their contact lenses”.

It is recommended to always remove lenses before sleeping unless they are particularly created for it and tap water should not be used on contact lenses. According to researchers, if one experiences eye pain, redness, discomfort or blurred vision, it is needed to immediately see a doctor.
