World leaders to meet in September for climate change summit
New York - Government leaders will meet in September in New York to provide political support for negotiations on a new agreement on capping greenhouse gas emissions, a United Nations official said Wednesday.
All heads of state and government have been invited to a climate change summit on September 22 at UN headquarters to give a "political impetus" for the final round of negotiations in Copenhagen in December, said Janos Pasztor, director of the UN climate change support team.
"The objective is for them to provide a political vision about where we are heading to," said Pasztor. He said world leaders need to build trust among themselves and support the climate change talks.
The meeting won't end with a political declaration, but participants will exchange views during eight roundtable discussions. (dpa)
