Hong Kong - Hong Kong's population grew by 0.9 per cent in the past year, taking the former British colony closer to the 7 million mark, government statistics revealed Friday.
The Census and Statistics Department said provisional figures showed the population increased by 59,300 in the 12 months that ended in June, bringing it to 6,985,200.
The increase comes as a result of births and the inflow of people with one-way permits from mainland China.

Zamboanga City, Philippines - A homemade bomb was found Thursday near a government building in a southern Philippine city amid tight security on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, police said.
The explosive device, made with 3 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, was concealed in a black plastic bag left in a vacant lot in front of the local legislative building in Zamboanga City, 875 kilometres south of Manila.

The research was carried out by collaborating teams from the University of York in the UK and the University of Calgary in Canada.
“It is well known that the main growing shoot of a plant can inhibit the growth of the shoots below. That’s why we prune to encourage growth of branches. What we are interested in is exactly how the main shoot can exert this effect,” said Professor Ottoline Leyser of the University of York’s Department of Biology.

The total number of prisoners who are allowed out of prison overnight has trebled this year, the Conservatives say.
According to government figures, the number of people granted a Resettlement Overnight Release (ROR) licence has gone from 3,813 in 2006 to 11,559 in 2008, the Independent reports.

Mashobra (Himachal Pradesh), Nov. 25 : Hundreds of rural folks recently converged here at Mashobra village near Shimla for an annual fair in which buffalo-fight was the prime attraction.
The annual fair depicts the traditional beliefs that prevail in these areas in which the buffalo-fight is held to please the local deity the Shani Dev or, the Saturn God in particular.
Villagers from far off places brought their buffaloes on Sunday (Nov. 22)for the traditional fight in which the specially reared buffaloes were brought to the ring and then provoked for the duel.
US official discusses northeast development

Colombo, Dec 11 : A top US official has discussed with Sri Lankan business leaders ways to rebuild the war-hit northern and eastern parts of the country.
The American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and the US embassy here co-hosted a roundtable discussion on reconstruction and rehabilitation in the northeast and new development opportunities there.
The event took place Wednesday, a US embassy statement said Friday.
