Yet another couple upsets clan council in Haryana

Rohtak, Oct 19 : Haryana, which has of late recorded various cases of village councils high-handedly deciding against same clan marriages, is seeing the fate of another young couple being decided by the village elders in the state's Rohtak district.

Village khap panchayat (clan council) has accused the couple of flouting social norms by marrying within the neighbouring villages.

"We have summoned the couple's parents during our next meeting after the festival season to take up the issue of this controversial marriage. Ther boy and the girl belonged to neighbouring villages and are considered kin as per our beliefs," said a senior member of village khap here Monday.

After marrying nearly four months ago, 21-year-old Karambir and 19-year-old Pooja are staying at the former's house at Sundana village, around 15 km from here.

Pooja belonged to Ballam village, just two kilometres from Sundana village. After falling in love, the couple eloped from their houses and got married in July this year.

During their stay at village Sundana, some villagers raised objection and brought this issue to the notice of the khap panchayat.

"The panchayat has called a meeting to discuss the issue. Presently the couple is staying together at Karambir's house and there is no threat to them," said Ashok, a friend of Karambir.(IANS)
