Aligarh Muslim University to re-open Dec 1New Delhi/Lucknow, Nov 16 The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), which was closed for an indefinite period Oct 30 following violent protests over murder of a student, would re-open Dec 1, vice-chancellor Abdul Aziz said Monday.

Aziz told reporters in New Delhi that teaching in the departments would resume in a phased manner.

The classes in the faculties of medicine, unani medicine, engineering and technology, management, life sciences, biotechnology, agriculture and Class XII, and all university maintained schools from nursery to Class X will be started Dec 1.

Classes for faculties of science, commerce and law will commence Dec 4, an AMU press release said.

Classes in faculties of arts, social science, theology along with Class 11 and diploma in engineering will start Dec 8, the release said.

Shahnawaz Alam, a B. Sc final year student, was shot dead by assailants Oct 25.

Around 600 students had blocked Delhi-Howrah rail route for hours, demanding action against those involved in the murder. Protesting students also disrupted the academic and official work in the varsity and also manhandled some university employees.

Addressing a press conference at the Press Club of India in New Delhi, Aziz said that arrangements wpuld be made in all hostels to receive the resident students two days ahead of the date of commencement of their classes.

The university will arrange 24-hour transportation for the students from bus stand and railway station to their hostels, he said.(IANS)
