Austrian flood situation stabilizes after three days rainVienna - Flood levels stabilized Thursday in parts of Austria after three days of heavy rain.

"The worst seems to be over," a meteorologist at Vienna's central weather station told national broadcaster ORF radio.

Several towns near major river systems remain flooded in the provinces of Upper and Lower Austria in the northeast of the country, ORF said. Some of them Lower Austria were not accessible by road.

More than 13,000 police, fighters and other helpers were working to prevent more damage, Interior Minister Maria Fekter said late Wednesday.

Forecasters predict more rain for Lower Austria, as well as the eastern and southern provinces of Burgenland and Styria, and warn renewed flooding is possible.

Vienna saw its heaviest downpours in 50 years and the prestigious Albertina museum evacuated about 950,000 artworks, including priceless drawings my Michelangelo, to protect the art. (dpa)
