Bell to launch content streaming service in Canada

Bell to launch content streaming service in CanadaMedia conglomerate, Bell has said that it will launch a new content streaming service that will be available on a host of devices for customers in Canada.

The Chief executive Officer (CEO) of the company, George Cope said that the new services will be rolled out for any device and will be available on demand. The service will stream content form Bell Media, Astral Media and several other sources.

"Combining the unique pay TV strengths of Astral with Bell Media's broad range of programming will create a Canadian service that truly stands apart from those of international providers," Cope said.

The company has not announced the pricing details of the service yet. This service will put Bell in direct competition with Netflix, which also has about 10 per cent of the country's total population as its subscribers. Cope pointed out that it does not contribute to Canadian content and it does not pay taxes in the country. The new service will be revealed in both the official languages of the country. Cope also announced plans for the launch of a new French-language news service in Montreal.

Bell is in the middle of CRTC hearings into its takeover of Astral Media. The company is aiming to sell 10 radio stations in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto and Ottawa in order to ensure the company fully complies with CRTC rules. The plans are part of the efforts to convince Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to give a go ahead for the $3.4-billion acquisition of Astral Media.
